VLBI array observations of nine previously unmapped compact radio sources were made at 1.6 GHz. The sources were chosen on the basis of their spectra, which are peaked between 1.0 and 3.0 GHz and are steep at high frequencies. The measured angular sizes are consistent with the spectral turnovers being due to synchrotron self-absorption. None of the sources had widely spaced symmetrical double structure. This is surprising, since nearly all known compact double sources have similar spectral properties. The authors conclude that sources with a compact double morphology constitute a relatively small fraction of all steep-spectrum compact sources with peaked spectra.
