With support from the NSF Program for Research and Education with Small Telescopes (PREST), Ritter Observatory has carried out a program of training visiting students in observational spectroscopy, mainly during the summer of 2006. During a visit of one to two weeks' duration, students worked with the 1-m telescope and spectrographs on clear nights and were trained in analysis of Ritter spectroscopic data with IRAF on cloudy nights. One-day class visits during the school year were also arranged, with a data reduction seminar during the afternoon and observations during the evening. Students' educational levels ranged from early undergraduate to second-year graduate, and the training programs were individualized according to each student's interests and experience. Ritter Observatory's instrumentation consists of a low- (R = 3,000-6,000) and a high- (R = 26,000) resolution (echelle) fiber-fed spectrograph, each in nightly use on the 1-m telescope with its own CCD camera and data acquisition system. Limiting visual magnitudes are about 8 for the low-resolution spectrograph and 5 for the echelle, depending on atmospheric conditions and on desired signal-to-noise ratio. With NSF-PREST support, the echelle has been equipped with a 4096 X 4096 CCD in a CryoTiger-cooled Series 600 camera fabricated by Spectral Instruments of Tucson, AZ. Thanks to the large format of the CCD, about half of the visible spectrum can now be captured in a single exposure. The training program will resume in March 2009 and will continue through August 2009. One to four students can be accommodated at one time. Applications for visits in any of the formats mentioned above by email to either of the authors are invited. On- or off-campus accommodation will be provided.
