Diffuse Ha emission outside of the condensed, classical H II regions has been observed in the arms of nearby spiral galaxies and in the arms of our Galaxy. For investigating the large-scale morphology of the galactic, diffuse Hα emission, we have developed a new photographic instrument which allows to take 60°-field photographs of the sky, with an f/1 (or f/0.7) focal ratio, through very narrow (10 Å FWMH) interference filters without any field dependence of the passband. Also, this camera may give, in place of a monochromatic image of the sky, a Fabry-Perot interference ring pattern projected onto a 60°-diameter sky area.
This instrument has been used by Sivan (1974) for an Ha survey of the whole Milky Way. The basic principles of this new device and a detailed description of its optical arrangement are given in this paper. The performance of our method is compared to that of photoelectric methods recently used for the observation of the galactic diffuse Hα background.
