A very-energetic X-ray burst has been detected during an observation of the X-ray source 4U 2129 + 11 in the M15 globular cluster by the Japanese Ginga satellite. The observation period took place between October 20, UT 1600 and October 24, UT 0400, 1988, and the X-ray source was observed with the Large Area Counter array onboard Ginga. The burst precursor preceded the main event by about six seconds, indicating that a strong expansion of the neutron star photosphere occurred. During the first 30 s of the main part of the burst, a series of slow radius oscillations was observed whose termination may signify the transition from an outflowing neutron star wind to a static extended (but very slowly shrinking) envelope. A time-resolved spectral analysis of the burst data shows evidence for deviations of the burst spectra from a black body which cannot solely be described in terms of spectral hardening. It is shown that, in principle, the results may be used to derive mass and radius information of the neutron star, as well as the anisotropy of the burst emission, provided it remains the same during the burst.
