A star of spectral type O4 III (n)(f) has been discovered in the bright H II region NGC 346 of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). It has the earliest spectral type known so far in the SMC, and it is shown to be a principal exciting star of NGC 346. Another, later O-type star found in NGC 346 provides a further example of the apparently general metal deficiency of Population I in the SMC. Two previously known OB supergiants near the periphery of NGC 346 may have affected its structure through mass ejection.
