We present the properties of CID-42 (z=0.359), a peculiar, unique source in the COSMOS survey. CID-42 is the only one, out of 2600 X-ray sources, which clearly shows the presence of two nuclei, 2.5 kpc apart, embedded in the same galaxy, in HST imaging, and a large, 1100km/s velocity offset between the narrow and broad components of Hbeta, in three different optical spectra from VLT/VIMOS and Magellan/IMACS. Moreover, CID-42 is the only source to have a redshifted absorption iron line in its XMM and Chandra X-ray spectra. The line is broad in the summed spectrum as the result of the varying energy of superimposition narrow lines over the 5 years of XMM and Chandra observations. The X-ray spectral analysis suggest that the absorber has to be highly ionized, in order not to leave a signature in the soft X-ray spectrum. That all these features occur in the same source is unlikely to be a coincidence.
We envisage two possible explanations for this system: (1) a SMBH pair (a Type 1 + a Type 2) in the pre-merger phase or (2) a Gravitational Wave recoiling BH, caught 1-10Myr after merging. In the first case, the X-ray absorption line can be explained as a BAL-like outflow from a type 2 AGN in front of a type 1 AGN, which illuminates the otherwise undetectable wind. The second possibility explains the 1100km/s offset measured in the Hbeta lines. Neither option easily explains both features. We describe observations that can discriminate between these options.
