A measurement of the OH (8-3) Meinel band under twilight conditions is reported and a detailed description of the experiment and data reduction procedure is presented. The derived intensity for the (8-3) band is about 100 R, in reasonable agreement with model calculations. The Rayleigh scattered sunlight that is the major source of background emission has been used to determine the temperature profile in the mesosphere. This derived profile is in satisfactory agreement with that expected from the CIRA-72 model for the season.
