A model has been devised for giant molecular clouds for the portion of their lives after they are formed in the spiral arms but before protostars form in them. The model assumes that internal turbulence is responsible for the observed (C-12)O line widths. It is shown that impacts with smaller clouds are energetically important and possibly capable of supplying enough energy to maintain the turbulence. If the internal magnetic fields are much less than 0.00005 Gauss, the model predicts that giant molecular clouds will contain a network of very small scale regions having a temperature of about 500 K.
