A high-resolution map of the H II of IC 1396 at 2695 MHz is presented. It is shown that the data cannot be explained by the usual shell-type model even if density fluctuations are included. Instead it is proposed that the exciting star, HD 206267, is approaching a group of denser clouds and has driven a horseshoe-type ionization front partly into them. It is speculated that the early-type star possesses an extended region of unimpeded stellar wind flow and that a possible faint central source is the beginning of a nebular shell resembling shells around a few Wolf-Rayet stars.
