Propellant-grade hydrazine (military specification MIL-PRF-26536E (USAF)) contains a minimum of 98.5 percent (by weight) hydrazine (HZ), with the remainder primarily water. Current fuel procurement policies allow for additional components, since they are based on performance tests. Bulk hydrazine is usually stored under an inert ullage pressure of either helium or nitrogen, so there will be dissolved gas in the liquid hydrazine. At the pressures and temperatures of normal fuel operations, previous work has demonstrated satisfactory equations of state (EOS) for vapor-gas mixtures. Similar treatment for liquid mixtures has not been satisfactory. This work reports on three approaches to developing a satisfactory thermodynamic description for MILSPEC hydrazine: (1) simple phase equilibrium models (2) group contribution methods to obtain activity coefficients; and (3) new mixing rules in the Peng-Robinson EOS.
