A theory for quasars with broad absorption lines is presented and model calculations of their spectra including the dynamical effects of spectral line overlap are performed. The theory is based upon the solution of the gas dynamical equations for a two-phase medium (cold clouds inside a hot gas) and of the radiative transfer equations in the reference frame of the moving clouds.
