We present the first results from a theoretical experiment aimed to test the capabilities of the GASPEX algorithm to recover the star formation history of individual galaxies from their SED. We explore which wavelength range contains enough information to establish well-constrained star formation histories of galaxies from ellipticals to irregulars. We weight the influence of well known spectral absorption lines in the determination of star formation history, and we conclude that at the current model spectral resolution and other observational constraints, the global stellar continuum is the most important component determining the star formation history of a galaxy, within the uncertainties introduced by other not well determined physical variables.
