We have obtained new mathematical results for the theory of clustering of peaks in a Gaussian random field and for the theory of percolation. This new approach can be used for the development of methods for the analysis of the cosmic microwave background. We have simulated 1O° × 1O° sky maps of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy expected from different cosmological models with 0°.5-1° resolution and have demonstrated the usefulness of the topological method to distinguish between different models of the noise.
