A detailed positive ion chemical scheme is proposed as a means to understanding D region rocket observations of electron density and hydronium ion profiles. It is found that the parameters responsible for the occurrence of a dip and a ledge in the electron density are the height distributions of the electron-ion production rates due to the ionization of O2 and NO as well as the height of intersection of these profiles. The major factor causing the disappearance of hydronium ions above about 85 km is found to be the rise of temperature above the mesopause; the mechanism is explained.
