The present status of Josephson-effect mixers for use in the 1 to 0.1 mm wavelength range in heterodyne receivers for astronomical observations from spacecraft is surveyed. The theory of Josephson mixers when used with an external clock oscillator is discussed. Experimental tests, mainly at 450 GHz using niobium point contact Josephson mixers mounted in fundamental mode waveguide cavities, are described. The best overall receiver noise temperature (double sideband) was 2100 K but 1000 K appears to be possible. Experiments at frequencies up to 89.1 GHz are also described. A general survey of the outstanding problems of building field usable Josephson receivers is presented. The only major outstanding problem is to combine ruggedness with suitable electrical characteristics. In conclusion, overall receiver noise temperatures of a few hundred K at 1 mm, rising to several thousand K at about 0.3 mm appear probable.
