A tephigram, used in studying the thermodynamic properties of a vertical atmospheric section, is constructed for Mars under the assumption of a predominantly water vapor and carbon dioxide atmosphere. When drawn on the tephigram, temperature profiles from the Mariner 9 suggest an atmosphere that is generally stable even during the hottest part of the Martian day. In addition, the tephigram may be employed to show that waveclouds such as those observed by Mariner 9 are almost certainly composed of water ice.
