A variation of the area scanning technique is applied to the determination of the brightness of a cometary nucleus. The Fourier transformation of a scan of a narrow slit across comet Bradfield (1974 III) is fitted to a scan of a nearby comparison star to obtain the upper limit of the fraction of light corresponding to the starlike nucleus of the comet. The calculated brightness is found to correspond to a magnitude greater than or equal to 8.9 and a nuclear radius less than or equal to 12 km, in accordance with the results of Ney (1974), assuming Lambert's phase law and an albedo of 0.7.
