The light from a bright event reflected from dust in stellar neighborhoods reveals a wealth of information, such as the 3-D structure and composition of the circumstellar and interstellar material, the distance to the echo source, and even information about the event itself (e.g., SN type). Most light echoes have been previously found around young supernovae (e.g SN87A), and novae (e.g. V838 Mon). Recently, the SuperMACHO project detected light echoes in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from ancient supernovae as well as around the dust-enshrouded AGB star, IRAS 05247-6941.
Here we present a more complete survey to find stars with light echoes in the LMC. The probability of finding light echoes around a star like IRAS 05247-6941 is higher if the star is (1) bright, (2) variable and (3) has dust in the vicinity. We have selected three sets of candidates that were most likely to satisfy these criteria: AGB stars (650 candidates), novae (26 candidates), and bright variables from the MACHO project (3262 candidates). We have found that none of the AGB stars and novae show light echoes up to a detection limit of V = 24 mag/arsec2. The analysis of the MACHO variables is still in progress as of this writing. For IRAS 05247-6941, we suggest that an outburst of several magnitudes similar to V838 Mon is the likely source event for the light echoes. Such outbursts are rare, which explains why we have not found any other bright star with light echoes in the LMC.
