Using a model Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics spiral galaxy and a radiative transfer code, we have created a synthetic HI Galactic Plane Survey, with data cubes covering 90° ≤ ℓ ≤ 180°. These cubes are compared to Milky Way Galactic Plane Survey data, in a latitude range of |b| < 3° and radial velocities corresponding to expected Second Quadrant values (v < +20 km s-1). With a focus on ‘Perseus Arm' gas in our simulated galaxy, we aim to trace atomic gas as it encounters shock motions at the spiral arm interface. The observation of HI self-absorption features at these shock sites allows us to investigate further the connection between cold atomic gas and the onset of molecular cloud formation.
