We present the results obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) during its performance-verification phase and the Japanese-South African 1.4m Infrared Survey Facility. Using the Multi-Object Spectroscopy we obtained spectra of Hα sources in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822; one of these sources also showed the Raman features characteristic of symbiotic stars. JHK photometry demonstrated that this was a small amplitude red-giant variable with a period of 142 days. It can therefore be unambiguously identified as an S-type symbiotic star which we name NGC6822 SySt-1.
