We present results from a 364 ksec observation in May 2008 of the BL LAC object Mrk421 with the X-ray observatory Suzaku. The 0.5 keV - 30 keV flux decreased by a factor of ˜2 over the course of the observation while several small flares occurred on timescales of hours. A power law plus high-energy cutoff model provides a good fit to the time-averaged spectrum as well as spectra from isolated epochs. We find that otherwise similar flares exhibit opposite hardness ratio evolutions. From cumulative observational evidence, we argue that the particle acceleration mechanism produces electron energy spectra with a range of spectral indices.
