"New Grid Systems for Ion Engines" is a project in the frame of The European Space Agency ESA's Technology Research Program. A consortia of European electric propulsion specialists works together aiming on a further improvement of grid systems for ion engines with respect to performance, lifetime and reliability. The work is devoted to ion propulsion for three different mission scenarios: Geostationary satellites, the BepiColombo mission and very high specific impulse for future missions. The project consists of three phases. In a study phase improvement and validation of numerical tools for grid design is performed. In parallel, standard and advanced grid materials are investigated. During the design phase grid systems for the three different applications are designed and manufactured. Finally, in the validation phase the three grid systems are intensively tested. In overall the program includes 4500h of testing.
