We propose a sensitive NEWFIRM JHK_S survey of three molecular clouds: Cep OB3 cloud (3 sq. degree), S140 cloud (1.5 sq. degree), and Mon R2 cloud (5.5 sq. degree). These data will complement existing and planned Spitzer IRAC/MIPS 3-24 micron imaging. With these data, we will survey these clouds for young stars and protostars with the sensitivity to detect 1 Myr objects well below the Hydrogen-burning limit. From this unprecedented census, we will examine the demographics of star formation in molecular clouds, the spatial distribution of birth sites, the dynamical evolution of young clusters, and the relationship between the density of newborn stars and the density of the parental molecular gas. This program is a resubmission of an approved 2007B program that could not be executed because the K_S filter was mistakenly not installed in the NEWFIRM instrument.
