The light curve of the great flare exhibited by EV Lac in July, 1980, which was of magnitude 6.4 and 4.5-hour duration, can be interpreted as a sum of two successive processes: a gradual, gentle flare and an enormous surge with a rapid flash. While subsequent observations have offered grounds for the belief that the flare observed was unique, it is noted that the observation has established that slow flares can occur in flaring field stars.
