A decay mechanism for sunspots is analyzed which involves turbulent Alfven-wave interaction with a strong magnetic field. The characteristic decay time of a sunspot is shown to depend strongly on the turbulent velocity amplitude and is estimated to be 70 days for a sunspot with a magnetic field of 3000 G, if the turbulent velocity is 2 km/s. The inflection point found in most sunspot decay curves is interpreted in terms of different rates of magnetic-field dissipation in two phases where the turbulence is degenerate and the degeneracy is removed as the magnetic field weakens.
