It is shown that the compression of the magnetosphere during an Si produces a change in the location of the boundary which separates regions with forward and backward convection. This results in an ionospheric current system which is almost identical to that observed during the Si. The propagation of an electric-field disturbance along magnetic field lines during an Si leads to the excitation of high-amplitude resonant oscillations of the field lines.
