As a class, the W Serpentis binaries exhibit strong high excitation emission lines in their FUV spectra; some possess FUV continua whose color temperature is inconsistent with previous classifications of the stellar components from optical data. Three W Ser systems were chosen for detailed study: SX Cas, RX Cas, and W Ser. Observational evidence for mass transfer and the presence of appreciable accretion disks exist in all three systems, but the exact nature of the components is quite uncertain.
