Some of the OAO-2 ultraviolet observations of intrinsically variable stars are discussed. New data are presented for the Ap variable iota Cassiopeiae. The cepheid variables are illustrated by alpha Ursae Minoris. The explosive variables Nova Serpentis 1970, Nova Aquilae 1918, SS Cygni, and the 1972 supernova in NGC 5253 are compared. The hypothesis that novae and dwarf novae maintain a constant luminosity, becoming visually bright only when an extended envelope is formed, is considered and rejected on the basis of observational evidence.
