We report the results of a 50 ks observation of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849-400910 ob- tained with the XMM-Newton satellite in August 2003. We have studied the pulse-phase resolved spec- tral variations using data of unprecedented quality. We present results on the variations of the power-law and blackbody-like components in the spectrum as a function of pulse phase. We have searched for the presence for an absorption feature near 8 keV. This feature was seen in BeppoSAX data and was present during part of the duty cycle and interpreted as due to cyclotron resonance by Rea et al. (2003). How- ever, we cannot confirm the presence of this line and we will discuss the possible reasons for this discrep- ancy. Key words: Anomalous X-ray pulsars; 1RXS J170849-400910.
