Methods for the determination of the physical parameters of planetary nebulae are analyzed using modeled nebula emission spectra, hydrogen atom density, and optical width in the Lyman continuum. For highly excited nebulae, the most reliable method for the determination of the stellar temperature is the method of relative ionization proposed by Pronik (1957, 1962) which is based on the comparison of oxygen and sulfur line intensities in nebulae with different exciting star temperatures. A method for the determination of the chemical composition of a nebular gas is also discussed.
