The isotopic composition of xenon in carbonaceous chondrites has been investigated experimentally. The chondrite samples were selected from a cross section of the major chondrite groups: C1 (Orgueil); C2 (Staroye Boriskino); C3V (Groznaya, Efremovka, and Allende); and C2M (Migei). A large excess of heavy isotopes, Xe-131, Xe-132, Xe-134, and Xe-136 was found in all the chondrites of the C3 group. On the basis of the experimental results, it is suggested that Xe has a three-component isotopic composition in carbonaceous chondrites. Some possible mechanisms for the excesses are discussed within the framework of current hypotheses concerning the fission of transuran elements, and mass fractionation processes in chondrites.
