An examination is conducted of the morphological consistency between the transversal component direction of the photospheric magnetic fields and the almost simultaneously observed penumbral-filament direction of the largest active region, during March 9-15, 1989. Both sunspot magnetic field and solar plasma observational data are used as criteria for the reliability of transversal component measurements. The results obtained by Kalman (1979) and Makita (1985) are confirmed.
