Line Broadening: Mercury
Scientific paper
Broadening constants for the van der Waals, resonant and Stark broadenings of the mercury spectral lines 546.1 and 577.0 nm were determined by comparison of synthesized and observed profiles in a mercury discharge. The plasma configuration was axially symmetric and side-on profiles were calculated by numerically solving the equation of radiative transfer. The normalized line profile of the absorption coefficient was convoluted by Lorentz and van der Waals profiles and LTE was assumed. The observed red shift of the minimum of the self-reversed line at 546.1 nm was explained by actions of neutral atoms. A semiclassical expression for the van der Waals and resonant broadening constants leads to values not far from the observed ones.
