New measurements of the entire intensive plate series of the stars Lal 21185 and BD + 5°1668, which are 2.5 and 3.75 pc distant, respectively, yield upper limits of very small mass for dark companions. For BD + 5°1669, two-year mean residuals over the 40-yr interval have a dispersion of 5 milliarcsec from a linear motion, which sets an upper limit at the level of one-half the mass of Jupiter, for example, for a dark companion with a 40-yr period. Simulations of planetary effects illustrate the high detectability of planetary masses and suggest that the complexities of a multibody planetary system need not be a serious obstacle to detection. For Lalande 21185 astrometric precision is not quite as high, but allows, at most, a companion of two Jupiter masses with a period of 22 yr suggested from the observations. The large amount of material permits a discussion of the differences in parallaxes determined in various time intervals across the 40 yr.
