Because Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are bright, they are good standard candles and probably the most accurate distance indicators on cosmological scales. Although SNe Ia are not equally bright, there is a known correlation between their peak brightness and the width of their light curves which is used to standardize the "Branch” normal SNe Ia. However some Type Ia supernovae appear dimmer and redder than the Branch normals, either because they are intrinsically different, or because they suffer greater host galaxy extinction. To understand the effect of dust extinction on SNe Ia is important to supernova cosmology. In this paper we present the results of a study on the effects of host galaxy extinction on the colors of SNe Ia.
Our main goal is to bound the uncertainties on the extinction values of SNe Ia. Other goals are to look for relationships between SNe color and location in the host galaxy, as well as differences between SNe in spiral and in elliptical galaxies.
The SINGS sample, Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), is one of the most complete color surveys of nearby galaxies and have good estimates of the dust masses. Using this data, we have developed statistics on host galaxy dust extinction of type Ia supernovae in the galaxies by randomly placing a Type Ia SNe spectrum template (at peak, and 12 days past peak) in each of 49 galaxies and calculating the color excess E(B-V) and color, B-V, of the output spectrum. Our results are consistent with observations of SNe Ia.
