Dorman et al^1,2 claim that the He-Rich hot subdwarf sdO stars are the ~ 0.5 M_&sun; progeny of the hottest horizontal branch stars. Several other theorists (Caloi for instance) ^3 have constructed horizontal branch model sequences that support sdO masses of ~ 0.5 M_&sun; with a very narrow mass dispersion. Yet the handful of observationally determined sdO masses tend to be much higher than 0.5 M_&sun; and show a wide mass dispersion ( 0.51 M_&sun; < M < 1.90 M_&sun; ). While the large dispersion in empirical sdO masses may be due in part to classification ambiguities, no observational confirmation of sdO masses exists. The observations proposed here are intended to photometrically identify a set of binary sdOs, from which a statistically significant empirical sdO mass determination can be made at a later date.
