We have studied 75 Fe I lines from wide slit FTS spectra obtained at Kitt Peak at the center of the disk, near the limb (μ=O.2) and in total flux. We present measurements of the intensity at the line center, the equivalent width and the asymmetry. We have done a detailed analysis of bisectors and studied the dependence of the asymmetry on the optical depth. Plots of the asymmetry versus the effective depth of formation are similar for all lines, with a small dependence on the excitation potential. The combined curve from all lines at the center of the disk shows that the asymmetry decreases with optical depth with a minimum at log τ = -O.33, which corresponds to the turning point of the C-shaped bisectors; no such minimum is observed at μ = O.2, where the measurements go up to log τ ˜ -0.8. We infer that the asymmetry is a measure of the average line of sight velocity of the material and we discuss the results in terms of characteristic heights derived by other observers.
