Time-dependent calculations are presented for the episodic accretion of Mg, Si, Ca, and Fe onto cool white dwarfs, for the cases of H-rich and He-rich white dwarf models with a mass of 0.6 solar masses in the 25,000 to 5000 K T(eff) range. Metal distributions swiftly reach a steady state in the outer layers of the models. Accretion-rate estimates based on a simplified interstellar medium are used to develop a two-phase accretion model; within this framework, a detailed study is conducted of the atmospheric metal-to-dominant-species and metal-to-metal abundance ratios. The predictions of the two-phase accretion scenario are discussed in detail.
