High angular resolution imaging and spectroscopy with Chandra has led to the discovery of arcsecond-scale discontinuities in the projected temperature and surface brightness maps of the merging clusters A2142 and A3667. We propose to build on these results by observing three other nearby clusters currently undergoing major mergers. Observations of shock features in these clusters will provide important insights into the physical state of the intracluster medium. Together with archival targets, these three new clusters will allow us to measure the range of shock strengths in merging systems and compare those measurements directly to hydro simulations of cluster evolution in various structure formation scenarios.
