High resolution IUE spectra of Algol taken in 1978, 1979 and 1983 are analyzed. Variable additional absorption components of Mg II, A1 III, C II and Si IV resonance lines are detected. The presence of Si IV lines is a clear indication of a high temperature region in the system. The observations are interpreted in terms of a variable mass accretion process. A significant deficiency of carbon in Algol, i.e., 0.06 of the solar value is shown.
