Icarus, General Relativistic Effect

Scientific paper

This paper examines the problem of general relativistic effect in the motion of the peculiar near-Sun asteroid (1566) Icarus. The relativistic correlation parameter λ is introduced and the question whether it is equal to 1 is used as a criterion for the confirmation or otherwise of the effect. We set up a numerical framework for the dynamics of bodies of the solar system, collected observational data relating to Icarus between the years 1949 and 1987, compared the measured and calculated values, solved for corrections to the six orbital parameters and λ, and found λ = 1.0124 +/- 0.0410, thus checked and confirmed the general relativistic effect. The problem of effect of solar quadruple moment was also studied and calculated, leading to a reasonable estimate for j2solar
