The information content of 0.2-2.5 micron range diffuse-reflection spectra of several H and L ordinary chondrites and the carbonaceous chondrite Allende was investigated. Two parameters were found to contain the most significant information on the meteorite mineralogy: (1) the combination of R/B, rho(0.56), and the BEND parameter, for grouping the chondrites into chemical categories, and (2) the B(II)/B(I) ratio, for determining the relative abundance of silicate phases in ordinary chondrites. It is suggested that these parameters can be used for characterizing surface areas of planets and asteroids with optically dominant silicate phases.
