Binary stars are of great importance to observational stellar astronomy because they provide the basic connections between mass, radius, and luminosity not easily obtainable in any other way. Prior to this dissertation fundamental determinations of all three of these quantities were known to high precision for only three binary systems. An attempt was made to augment these fundamental determinations in two ways: (1) a classical study of a faint, nearby eclipsing binary (CM Dra) using new instrumental techniques, and (2) a relatively new kind of study (surface brightness) applied to large number of eclipsing binaries and nearby stars.
