We describe a project to study a sample of galaxy clusters detected by the X-ray satellite ROSAT during the All Sky Survey. This sample belongs to the ESO Key Programme of complete optical identification of the X-ray sources detected by the Survey in a field of 575 square degrees of the southern sky. The goals are to build an unbiased, complete and purely X-ray selected sample of galaxy clusters, and to determine their local X-ray luminosity function.
