Measurements are reported of the positions, sizes, shapes, and orientations of 3000 images of galaxies in an area of 2 sq arcdeg near the south galactic pole obtained with the UK 48-in Schmidt telescope in Australia. The data are analyzed to investigate the possible existence of intergalactic dust clouds, clustering and pairing of galaxies, the ratio of spirals to ellipticals, and the number-density relationships. The galaxies are estimated to be distributed to distances corresponding to redshifts of about 0.5, blank areas in the distribution of nearer galaxies are shown probably to be due to clustering rather than intergalactic obscuration, a greater tendency to clustering is seen in the more remote galaxies, a substantial fraction of all galaxies is found in dynamically related pairs, and no significant difference is observed between the ellipticity frequency distributions of nearer and more distant galaxies. The number-diameter count indicates a local excess of sources within about 150 Mpc, general agreement with conventional cosmological models, and a deviation from the theoretical models for small images.
