We report results from a search for the highest redshift galaxies (J-band drop-outs) in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF). These sources are selected to satisfy the color criterion J-H > 1.3, subject to the further condition of no detections at wavelengths shorter than J-band (1.2 micron) down to the limit of the ACS/HUDF images. Over the area of 2.5'x2.5', covered by NICMOS, we found two sources satisfying these criteria.
The combined optical (BViz- HST/ACS), near-infrared (JH- HST/NICMOS and K-band VLT/ISAAC) and mid-infrared (3.6-8 micron- Spitzer/IRAC) observations of the HUDF show evidence for both J/H and Balmer breaks in the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of one of these candidates, implying the object to be at z ˜ 7. Detailed analysis of the SED of this source also confirms this to be a star-forming galaxy at this redshift, with small extinction (E(B-V) =0.05), metallicity Z=0.004 and a starburst age (time elapsed since the burst) of 900 Myrs. The possibility of degeneracy among these parameters is investigated in detail and the estimated redshift is found to be robust.
The strong Balmer break in the SED of this source implies this to be a post-starburst galaxy with a stellar mass of ˜1011 M(solar). This indicates the object has undergone efficient star formation activity, forming a substantial amount of its stellar mass at very early times.
