Chandler Wobble, Stochastic Excitation, Effective Atmospheric Angular Momentum
Scientific paper
Based on the hypothesis that the Chandler wobble is excited by stochastic motions, a nonlinearly stochastic model for study of the Chandler wobble is proposed, which is composed of a Heaviside's step function with stochasticity and a Eulerian centred differential scheme for linear oscillator with drag. The relation among the amplitude of the Chandler wobble and parameters in the model is studied from both aspects of theoretical analysis and numerical computation. The statistical analysis for the time series of effective atmospheric angular momentum depended on observation shows that the stochastic component can excite 28-40% of the amplitude of the Chandler wobble. Finally, some discussions are made for the hypothesis of stochastic excitation.
