Among known classes of ultra--steep-spectrum sources (α < -1 with S ν α ) are pulsars, high redshift radio galaxies, fossil radio galaxies and galaxy cluster halos. VLA observations of the Coma cluster at 74 MHz have produced one of the deepest low-frequency fields ever, with an rms noise level of approximately 30 mJy beam-1. Within the large field of view at 74 MHz (11o), we have identified nearly 1000 sources brighter than 0.15 Jy (not all of which are associated with the Coma cluster). By cross-correlating our catalog with higher frequency surveys (notably 7C, WENSS, and NVSS) we have determined or constrained the spectral indices of all of the sources in our catalog. We have made 20 cm observations of those sources with α < -1.5. We have used the VLA to observe those sources with α < -1.5 at 20 cm. We present preliminary results from this imaging program. Basic research in radio astronomy at the Naval Research Laboratory is supported by the Office of Naval Research.
