An approximate analytical solution of the continuity equation for the steady-state nighttime F-region is analyzed. The solution is obtained by integration in elementary functions. The analysis leads to expressions relating the parameters of the F-region to the diffusion flow that sustains the nighttime F-region. These relations are useful for comparing experimental and theoretical N(h) profiles.
