A method of statistical determination of the parallaxes, masses, and absolute magnitude of binary stars is developed for application on the Hipparcos satellite. Initial figures are obtained for forty binaries observed in the period 1967-1981 at the Nice Observatory. It is noted that mass-luminosity ratios exist for only 2 percent of the thousands of binaries observed to date. Kepler's third law, Pogson's relation, and a mass-luminosity relation are used to devise a figure for dynamic parallaxes, from which the apparent movement of a companion star can be deduced. An instantaneous orbital constant is then calculated, which allows a statistical evaluation of mass and luminosity after initial detection and observable motions have been recorded of the rotational period of the binaries.
